At Aliwal North a new born baby wrapped in black plastic bags were found dumped in a dustbin in location on Tuesday.

Net care 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said that the baby had been found in a dustbin in the toilets of the Aliwal North Mall’s business district.

Botha said: “The advanced life support paramedic and his team worked fervently to stabilise the child that was deprived of oxygen. After a few minutes the child responded to the treatment.”

He said the baby was taken to hospital for further care and police are investigating the baby’s abandonment.

The child is under the care of the Stop Gender Based Violence Centre (SGBVC) and our qualified professional nurses and social workers are taking good care of the child.

The children who come with their mothers to the Stop Gender Based Violence Centre (SGBVC) shelter towards the end of the year often face the long summer holidays with little access to family and friends. Fortunately, there are a number of people and organisations who offer their time to ensure that the children enjoy their share of outings and parties.

On 14 December 2019, well know radio presenter DJ Poster come to the Stop Gender Based Violence Centre (SGBVC) centre with his breakfast show crew to do a programme for their weekly radio slot, BEE, which was aired on Monday 18 December 2019. More importantly for the children though, were the party he organized not just for the SGBVC children, but for the children at the other shelters in Aliwal North as well. There were clowns to entertain, a jumping castle to use up the energy provided by the candy floss and cool drink, and of course, Father Christmas ( who arrived in an ambulance with sirens blazing) to hand out the presents.
